Field Trips

General Information: There will be two optional field trips associated with the Costa Rica workshop. These field trips should offer excellent opportunities for participants to experience the convergent margin first hand. One will precede the workshop (June 14-17) and focus on Tectonics and Geology. The other will begin after the workshop (June 22-26) and focus on Volcanoes. Field trips costs are not covered by the sponsors of the workshop, and will carry additional costs for those who choose to participate in one or both.


Tectonics and Geology of the Costa Rican Forearc Inboard of the Cocos Ridge

Night of June 14th- Hotel Aeropuerto

June 15th Morning-Fly San Jose to Puerto Jimenez on SANSA. Afternoon - Rio Tigre-scaly fabrics of the Osa Melange. Raised beach ridges on Osa Peninsula

Night of June 15th- Parrot Bay

June 16th- Morning- Osa mélange outcrops of Punta Carbonera and overlying turbidites. Pillow basalt quarry in Rincon block. Limestones of the Fila Costena imbricates. Afternoon- Playa Pinuela to see raised beach ridge on the frontal thrust

Night of 16th- Villas Gaia

June 17th- Morning-Playa Ventanas- turbidites of the Terraba basin, Mesoscale duplex, tear faults. Afternoon- Outcrops of the Terraba gorge-Imbrication of the Terraba basin, lahars of the Rio General, intrusions of gabbro. Arrive at conference hotel in PM

Payment Information:

1. The field trip fee will cost $330. This fee includes the cost of the:

  • flight from San José to Puerto Jimenez (Friday, June 15)
  • bus
  • one night shared accommodation at the Parrot Bay Hotel (Friday, June 15)
  • one night of shared accommodation at Villas Gaia (Saturday, June 16)
  • and dinner on Sunday, June 17

Friday's lunch and dinner and Saturday's breakfast are included in the Parrot Bay Hotel charge. Saturday's dinner and Sunday's breakfast are included in the Villas Gaia hotel charge.

2. You can pay the $330 fee by check or credit card. Checks should be made payable to Boston University and sent to:

Payment of the field trip fee must be made by Wednesday, June 6 .

3. Lunches on Saturday and Sunday are not included in the field trip fee. You will need to pay for lunch on-site, the cost is not expected to exceed $10 per day.

4. Our flight on Friday, June 15 is at 10:30 am from local Sansa Airport which is next to the international airport. It's immediately to the west (left as you face the international airport). Please plan to meet the group at the airport by 9:30 am. We are no longer planning to stay as a group at the Hotel Aeropuerto on Sunday, June 14. You should make your own hotel reservations for Sunday night. Some recommendations are:

    June 22. Travel to Fortuna in late afternoon after end of meeting

    June 23. Arenal (young volcanic center < 150 ka with very young active center, currently in eruption)

    June 24. Guanacaste volcanoes and tephra sheets

    June 25. Rincon de la Vieja (example of Guanacaste volcanic center)

    June 26. return to San Jose/Alejuela

    • 2 nights of shared accommodation at the Hotel San Bosco (Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23)
    • 2 nights of shared accommodation at El Sitio Hotel (Sunday, June 24 and Monday, June 25)
    • Entrance fee to Arenal National Park
    • 4 lunches (6/23-6/26)

    Breakfasts are included in the cost of the hotels.
